Each year, Universities Ireland provides a financial subsidy to support the provision of a position of sanctuary at an Irish university for scholars suffering grave threats to their lives, liberty and well-being. Member universities can help threatened scholars by hosting them during temporary visits as professors, researchers, lecturers, visiting scholars, post-docs, graduate fellows or students. In most cases this is a one semester or one year position as a visiting scholar, researcher or professor at a higher education institution in a safe location anywhere in the world. Scholars at Risk also provides advisory services for host institutions and scholars, including those still under threat as well as those forced into exile who are struggling to restart their lives and their careers. Since the network’s launch over 10 years ago, more than 400 scholars have found sanctuary. In return, scholars contribute to their host communities through teaching, research, lectures and other activities.
